Description:
The Chardonnay grape variety is becoming increasingly important in Girlan. Poor clay soils, low yields and gentle vinification bring a lot of freshness, good structure and unique character of origin into the glass.

Grape variety:
Chardonnay - Alto Adige DOC

Production area:
For this wine we use grapes from selected vineyards located in the Überetsch at an altitude of 450 - 530m above sea level. The special composition of the soils - characterised by poor gravel and clay soils with lime deposits - gives the wine its name.

Vinification:
The grapes are harvested by hand and delivered in small containers. After subsequent whole bunch pressing, the must is clarified from the lees by natural sedimentation. 50% of the grape must ferments and matures in stainless steel tanks and 50% in large wooden barrels. After fermentation, only part of the must undergoes malolactic fermentation. After 6 months of ageing on the fine lees, the wine matures in the bottle before it is released for sale.

Food pairing:
Marna Chardonnay is versatile and goes perfectly with vegetarian starters, rich fish dishes and also with white meat.

Ageing potential:
more than 5 years.

10 - 12°C.

The Cantina Girlan was founded in 1923 in an ancient farmstead from the XVI century. Back then 23 winegrowers laid the foundation stones of what was later to become the winery we see today. The walls, steeped in ancient tradition, and the labyrinthine corridors of the cellar harbour the secrets of state-of-the-art winemaking technology and hold the ideal conditions for ageing our wines. In 2010, work was started to modernize the cellar and bring it into line with modern technical standards.
Today, about 200 greatly committed and motivated winegrowers and their families farm an area covering about 220 hectares of vineyards in the best production areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina. Our enologist, Gerhard Kofler, keeps in close personal contact with the winegrowers and provides his professional advice during the growing season. This beneficial exchange of expertise sets the foundations for producing highest quality wines.
Our tenets
We pursue the following main objectives: we seek, on one hand, to showcase and promote the historic local grape varieties and on the other, to create impressive characterful wines using international grape varieties yet keeping them closely connected to the land. This is all achieved while respecting nature's flow and rhythms.
