Description:
The winter pear 'Liegelts Butterbirne' is a variety rich in tradition and without doubt one of the tastiest winter pears. The plant originated in Bohemia around 1650 and the unique cinnamon-like taste of its fruit has made Pyrus communis 'Liegelts Butterbirne' (bot.) a favourite with many people over the centuries. Thus the pear variety has been preserved and still makes people rave about it today. The medium-sized pears are ovoid, which also gave the plant the nickname 'globe pear'. The fruit has a smooth, yellowish skin that is more often speckled with dots or rust spots. They give off a slightly spicy smell. The yellowish-white, fine flesh is melting and very juicy. It tastes delicately sweet and has the typical spiciness of the winter pear 'Liegelts Butterbirne'. Due to regular and high yields, the garden owner enjoys the abundant harvest. The pears are ripe for picking at the end of September or beginning of October, and are ready for consumption until January. In normal storage the fruits do not wilt, but checks for storage scab are advisable.
