The Diplomático Distillery was founded in 1959 in the Lara Region, in the wide and fertile countryside near the town of Barquisimeto. At the end of the 1990s, a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs led by José Rafael Ballesteros, whose family already ran an important company in the sector, purchased the distillery and the sugar cane production land. The Lara region, where Diplomatic Rum is produced, is one of the most valuable sugar cane growing areas. The different distillation techniques used and the exceptional storage in barrels allow Rum Diplomático to develop its extraordinary virtues. Today, the dream of those pioneers to produce one of the best rums in the world has been realised in 63 countries where it is exported and appreciated with great success. It takes its name from the Planas Valley, a region located close to the Diplomático distillery at the foot of the Andes mountain range. The area benefits from an ideal terroir and micro-climate for the production of the best rums. Planas is an elegant and rich blend, surprisingly intense for a white rum. An unexpected explosion of flavours and aromas that is balanced by the delicate roundness of this rum. Planas is an extraordinary blend of Pot Still (50% heavy rums) and Batch Kettle (50% light and semi-heavy rums) stills. It is aged for up to 6 years and then filtered.

The Diplomático distillery is located at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Venezuela, where the purest waters flow. This location was also carefully selected for its proximity to the main sugar cane processing plants. Founded in 1959, Licorerías Unidas S.A (LUSA) owned the distillery through its main shareholder, Seagram's International, one of the largest wine and spirits companies in the world. In 2002, LUSA was sold to a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs and became a 100% private Venezuelan company with the current name: Destilerías Unidas S. A. (DUSA). The distillery is unique in that it houses three different distillation processes that, combined with mastery in the art of blending, produce iconic rums such as the world-acclaimed Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva. Diplomático places a high value on quality and authenticity in the production process, supporting employees and the local community, and protecting the environment through its "Distilled Consciously" platform with sustainable production practices. Indeed, as part of Diplomático's philosophy, respecting and protecting the environment has always been one of its main objectives. From the outset, DUSA has set up a system to manage by-products, recycle waste and optimise resources. Thanks to the quality of its products and its social and environmental commitment, among other recognitions, in 2018 the important magazine Wine Enthusiast awarded Diplomático as "Spirit Brand of the Year". Awarded to a rum company for the first time, this award recognises companies and individuals whose vision has had an effect on the spirits industry.
